Matt Cutts on directories..

Friday, September 7th, 2007

Matt has posted over on DP about directories and what value there may have:

”Q: Hey, as long as we’re talking about directories, can you talk about the role of directories, some of whom charge for a reviewer to evaluate them?
A: I’ll try to give a few rules of thumb to think about when looking at a directory. When considering submitting to a directory, I’d ask questions like:
- Does the directory reject urls? If every url passes a review, the directory gets closer to just a list of links or a free-for-all link site.
- What is the quality of urls in the directory? Suppose a site rejects 25% of submissions, but the urls that are accepted/listed are still quite low-quality or spammy. That doesn’t speak well to the quality of
the directory.
- If there is a fee, what’s the purpose of the fee? For a high-quality directory, the fee is primarily for the time/effort for someone to do a genuine evaluation of a url or site.

The one thing that got to me in the above post by matt is the 25% rejection… As a run a few “niche” directories myself and have for many years now, the 25% is so high imho… I’ve just done the maths on one i’m getting 8% inclussion, thats a 82% rejection!…

75% inclussion would imho = 75% of a free for all.. vs my 8%…

Hmm…

But on the positive side I’m glad matt has spoken against FFA …

The matt cutts patent! Removing documents!

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

This is a patent by matt, a patent either being used or to be used soon…

As most people know matt is the spam killer thus the patent is about remove doc’s.. Google want’s to index the world and beyond but isn’t interested in the crap in the world know as spam.. The problem has always been the same.. “how to get rid of spam” ..

This patent tells us that google could be or will be using user group (good one and bad one) to see if a doc should be removed…

msgraph over on webmaster world posted:

Most is about your typical personalized search/toolbar with the option to remove pages/sites but this part was interesting…

40. A method, comprising: aggregating information regarding documents that have been removed by a group of users; and assign scores to a set of documents based on the aggregated information.

41. The method of claim 40, wherein aggregating information regarding documents that have been removed by a group of users includes: identifying a set of legitimate users and a set of illegitimate users; and collecting information regarding documents that have been removed by the set of legitimate users.

42. The method of claim 40, wherein aggregating information regarding documents that have been removed by a group of users includes: identifying a set of users with a defined relationship; and collecting information regarding documents that have been removed by the set of users.

Monday, January 29th, 2007

Well it seem like another PR update…

 odd…

I seeing an update on this blog of no deep links up to december ? ..

This update isn’t imho making sense on the site so i’m not going to bother commenting on the flow here..

Other sites have had a PR update too.. some up some down .. some odd… (most odd) and some to be expected..

This update imho looks like a freshness PR bonus.. (fresh link are counting a lot)

What else…

Well …

Google bombing algo change…

The likes of “lair” (was tony bliar at no1 ) and “miserable failure” (was bush at no1) no longer at the top!!!

matt cutts has posted regarding this to confirm that this will only effect bombed sites and not and overall algo change..

Serps are moving none stop and as matt said which I post about just over a week ago that the data refresh is set to 1-2 days…

Watching the serps is crazy..

More to come tomorrow..

Data refresh @ 1-2days from 3-4 weeks!

Thursday, January 18th, 2007

A lot my movement on serps and this is why!

I’ve mentioned this before, but one of our data pushes that used to happen every 3-4 weeks is now happening more like every 1-2 days. Regular searchers won’t really notice this, but if you see more variance in your rankings, I believe it’s probably due to that data push happening more frequently.

Thanks matt!

Clear and simple :D
