Making a good $ from adsense on forums isn’t to easy…

I’ve tested and tested placements colours and sizes..

The main problem is always not to put off your users by having advertising…

from google a while ago regarding how megaforums are making far more adsense $$$ ..

I personally felt that it was taking it to far as the first thing a new user sees is a chance to register with ads next to it.. hmmm.. not good for growing the forum imho…

So I took the same idea to make people sign up instead of offering them a choice of competitors…

So.. I’m using VB and if you need the code just drop me a email…

Basically i’ve inserted in the first post the nice large sqaure adsense box BUT only viewable to non members… Above the box its mentions that if you sign up this ad box will no longer be shown…

Since adding this registerations have really increased along with the adsense $ ….

Why?

Well many forums answer questions, mine is no different… Many people search for an anwser, hit the site and leave, now if these people see enough of attactive ad then you get a click vs the back button.. Simple..

Google blogged yesterday about problems with the referral 2.0 ads..

The blog post also offers and contact form of which I’m about to contact due to the problems i’ve had with odd ads showing for my choosen keywords…

I’m not to mad so far on playing with the google referrals 2.0 ”as yet”..

Two things really bugs me!

Two is the ORDER … Why oh why is it in imho a “bad order” …

The screen shot below show I have 1 click on a product referral but on the summary page its not showing the “clicked” product..   

I have NO idea what order google is using .. Its not using clicks, impressions or even alphabetical so whats its doing ??

This is a theory but seem to make sense…

Next month I’m going to reverse the logical and see but first let me explain the theory…

I set up a site for my girl friend of which she loves…
The site has been growing which is great…
It’s a bit of a fun site and only has adsense and Amazon as its sources of revenue..
Now the hopefully may take off in the future but its all fun..

So to the point of the theory..
The traffic to the site has been increasing by the day and it’s full of fresh content which is added on an almost daily basis.. To kick start the visitors I added a small budget to PPC’s on yahoo msn and of course google adwords…

Now if you don’t know over in the uk its tax time for many of us which means by the 31st July you need to pay 1/3 of a years worth of tax so me trying to save a little cut my girlfriends adwords budget by 1/3….

So I’m getting 1/3 of the adwords referrals compared with last month thus a little less traffic.. The funny thing is that the adsense CTR and impression are pretty similar BUT the cost per click has increased 3 times.. Yep 3 times..

So would this be a defensive technique to stop Arbitrage?
Smart pricing if PPC referral?
This would make a lot of sense..

Anyway next month as I said I’ll reverse the logic and I am getting those warning from my adwords account TELLING to increase the budget to get and extra traffic per month…

I post about the round ads on the 27th June.. I added 1 round ad to a site with a low ctr to see what difference it would make being round…

 hmmm.. By the looks of it yes but maybe its a premium account holder..

Today was a day I’d been waiting for (but forgot about)..

I really had it in the back of my mind… Didn’t know the date until today when almost every national news paper in the UK covered the story..

What is it.. Well Can’t tell you that yet as it making a PPC killing Not 1 person is bidding on this k/w so I’m getting at the bargain price of 2p per click / $0.04 …

So here is story..  About 2 months ago my girl friend found a item in a mag that she liked and but it up on her site.. After a few days the page was indexed it ranked just under the actual item site #2 or #3 on google..

Traffic was pretty steady until about a month ago when its went up by 5 times in one day and stuck at that level.. But at the same time along came the competition..

Now the page is around #11 top of page 2 and returning still a fare amount of traffic as its top 5 in yahoo ..

A month ago the traffic increased on this term again so I added it to a social bookmarking site… That site now ranks in the top 5 and returns ok amount of traffic..

The comp is now the likes of ebay gumtree.. And soon evey news paper under the sun… I posted in a few forums and other blogs to help that site today but is it too little.. Just how long does and news story last in the minds google/yahoo searchers..

So due to the comp being old and bigger than me I had the idea to bid on the k/w after noticing no one else had touch it today.. And I’m hitting almost 20% CRT a nice yellow background .. 100% targetted ad txt as its only for the 1 “keyword” and no other ads…

Fingers crossed this one lasts ..

I just logged into my GF’s adsense account to see how she is doing today..

I looked at yesterday and today and though my eyes or browser cache is playing tricks on me…

 The amount were the same… ahhhh scared..

 Really odd…

Its only 10:40 am in the UK so hopefully she’ll have a good day..

Yesterday she had 2 click which returned 1cent.. never seen them that low before.. At first I though it had to be site targetting but nop.. contextual..
